PORTA NUOVA AND CITY LIFE DISTRICTS – 2.5 Hours

PORTA NUOVA AND CITY LIFE DISTRICTS – 2.5 Hours 1024 683 TrekMI

Since 2005 the appearance of the Milanese business district today called Porta Nuova, “the New Gate” has changed dramatically. It was officially completed in 2018 with the inauguration of the BAM (the “Library of Trees”), although some new projects are still in progress. Beautiful fountains, stained glass windows and skyscrapers are now the backdrop to swarming bank employees. The area offers visitors views of the tallest skyscraper in Italy (the Unicredit Tower) and the very Milanese “Vertical Forest”, voted in 2014 as the most beautiful skyscraper on the planet.

From there we’ll move on to the CityLife District and experience a ride on the state-of-the-art automatic subway train of the purple subway line. The CityLife neighborhood is an entirely unique area to Italy. Here, in the largest entirely-pedestrian area of the city of Milan we’ll discover the imposing and futuristic three towers and the luxury estate buildings designed by “Starchitects” Arata Isozaki, Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind. The harmony and peace afforded by the presence of the parks, the modern architecture and the intrinsic beauty of the final project make owning an apartment in CityLife a prestigious status symbol. Something in complete alignment with a city whose inhabitants enjoy luxury residences on a grand scale.

THE BEST OF MILAN – 2 Hours

THE BEST OF MILAN – 2 Hours 2000 1333 TrekMI

Let’s start by getting familiar with the heart and headquarters of one of the wealthiest and most powerful courts of the Italian Renaissance: the Sfoza’s Castle (Castello Sforzesco in Italian), where artist such as Leonardo da Vinci were hired to delight the local lords with their works of art. Lords that have granted the city a majestic look, commissioning the construction of some of the most imposing and artistically relevant buildings.

The tour will then continue to the Brera district. A picturesque pedestrian area particularly appreciated by locals. A high concentration of tiny restaurants, art galleries and fine old-living curious shops are located here, near one of the most important museums in Northern Italy: the Brera Art Gallery.

We will then reach one of the greatest Opera Houses worldwide: the magnificent La Scala Theatre, where artists such as Mozart, Maria Callas, Liszt, Verdi and Pavarotti have performed and where still today, the best contemporary lyrics singers continue performing alongside dancers and musicians.

We’ll then stroll through the amazing architectural connector between the Scala Theatre and Milan’s main square: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a parade of high fashion stores designed over 150 years ago as a tribute to the new born Italian Nation.

At the other end of the Gallery we’ll finally reach the greatest symbol of Milan: the Duomo, the 4th biggest Catholic cathedral in the world and a masterpiece of art and architecture. What a better place to end our tour if not here? The worthy crowning for a city that most people didn’t expect to be so beautiful!

VAL MASINO EXPLORE – 2 Days Trek – Level DEMANDING

VAL MASINO EXPLORE – 2 Days Trek – Level DEMANDING 846 590 TrekMI

Located in the very central part of the Italian Alps and framed by those high mountains that divide it from Switzerland, Val Masino is, with good reason, one of the most beautiful italian valleys. The “land of granite”- as everybody calls it – is a paradise for rock climbers but also for those enthusiastic hikers who are willing to get closer to some over 3,000 metres high peak. In two days we’ll have a chance to explore its most beautiful corners, including the “Golden Valley” (Valle dell’Oro) and Little Yosemite (Val di Mello).

Day 1
We hike to the Omio Hut which will be our home for the night. Built on the edge of a panoramic bastion that overlooks the Masino Valley, the Omio Hut is a spectacular observation point of the highest mountains in the area.

Day 2
After descending from the Omio Hut and back to the car, we reach the Mello Valley, Val di Mello gets its namesake (Italian Little Yosemite) for features resembling some of the majestic formations found in California’s Yosemite Valley: imposing walls and domes of polished granite rock modelled by glaciation, streams, pools and waterfalls of crystal-clear icy water. A scenic background for the valley’s lush mountain meadows of exceptional natural beauty!

From Milan we catch a train to the city of Como (1h), our gate to the enchanting blue water of this world-famous lake. WAYFARER’S PATH – Day Hike – Level EASY, MODERATE or DEMANDING 2000 1333 TrekMI

Half-way up the hills on the Eastern side of Lake Como, a series of ancient cobblestone paths and mule trails connect charming little shoreline villages to the higher altitude pristine meadows. Where they merge, a longer trail begins known today as the Wayfarer’s Path (“Sentiero del Viandante” in Italian). Over the centuries, this well traveled trail was used by wayfarers, pilgrims and traders heading to the planes and the higher alpine passes. This path overlooks spectacular views of Lake Como featuring olive tree plantations along the shore as well as chestnut, oak, and spruce forests higher up on the mountain sides. While immersing ourselves into this lush natural region we’ll explore the less-touristy side of this spectacular lake. The whole path is 45 kms long (28 miles) and it takes four days to cover it all. We are opting only for a one day hike, but it will be enough to experience the most beautiful and panoramic section of the trail. Keeping the little picture-perfect village of Varenna as our focal point, we can choose between three different levels of hiking difficulty:

  • Easy: from Varenna to Bellano, including a visit to the gorge of Bellano (optional)
  • Moderate: from Lierna to Varenna (lower route)
  • Demanding: from Lierna to Varenna (higher route)

In all three cases the transportation from/to Milan will be organized by train.
