DESCRIPTION
Climbing the steep roads to the valleys north-east of Lake Como, we reach the beginning of the Western Rhaetian Alps. We’re now in a land rich in geology, with stunning hidden valleys (including Little Yosemite), crystal-clear lakes and imposing glaciers ready to be discovered. Fascinating places that can easily be reached by an extensive network of well maintained hiking trails and mountain lodges.
The Rhaetian Alps have been a territory of great commercial and strategic value dating back to the time when the ancient Romans established here a province of their Empire. A connection between southern and northern Europe but also a dividing line between ancient cultures, traditions, faiths and religions. The Rhaetian Alps mark today the border between Italy and Switzerland.
Connecting these two countries is the famous Bernina Railway Line, recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage since 2008. A great work of engineering linking the little italian village of Tirano to the iconic Swiss ski resort known as Sankt Moritz. A good option would be experiencing the Rhaetian Alps by hiking to discover the wonders on the italian side before hopping on the Bernina Express Train to enjoy the panoramic journey along one of the steepest railway lines in the world!
